RacismLet us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty. Martin Luther King Jr.
Racism is a social problem probably as old as our society is. It
takes a multitude of forms and can be defined in many ways. Its ideology is
based on the inevitable differences between various racial and ethnic groups, as
well as deeply embedded historical, social, cultural, technological and power
inequalities. Compared with many other countries our past (lets not forget the
White Australia Policy 1901-1973 too soon) and present racial problems are
relatively mild, and we can only pride ourselves that we were spared the shame
that many other countries have to wear for many decades to come.
While we acknowledge our achievements towards creating a fair
multicultural society we are also fully aware of our present challenges. Racism
is by no means dead, and still represents a deadly threat to our society. We
shall work hard to eliminate the barriers between all sections of our community
and give a fair go for everyone. British or Aboriginal, Buddhist or Muslim,
black or white, each one of us shall have the same rights, responsibilities and
benefits, and be treated in the same way.
